Home and Vehicle Modification Program

The Home and Vehicle Modification Program (HVMP) provides home or vehicle modifications to eligible individuals and families. This enables children and adults with disabilities that restrict mobility to live safely in their homes and enjoy the dignity and satisfaction that comes with living independently, being able to work and participate in community life. The program, funded by the Ministry of Community and Social Services, is administered by the Ontario March of Dimes.

What it covers

The HVMP provides grants for modifications such as:

  • vehicle hand controls, foot controls, lifts, safety devices, etc.;
  • specialized seating for a child;
  • ramps, platform lifts, stairway lifts and lifting/transferring devices, including necessary structural changes, elevating devices;
  • a child's play area;
  • installation of wheel-in showers, wall grab bars and bathtub safety rails;
  • remote control garage door devices for people who use wheelchairs, scooters or who walk with difficulty; and
  • barrier-free modifications to garages or car ports.

The maximum government contribution for either a home or a vehicle modification is $15,000. The home and vehicle maximums can be combined for a total grant of $30,000 if the applicant needs to modify both their home and vehicle, and if the applicant qualifies. Applicants with incomes more than $35,000, after certain deductions are considered, may be required to contribute to the cost of modifications.
